Message from the Superintendent

Superintendent Johnson stands with seniors and community members at the Senior scholarship donor luncheon.
Thank you to these seniors for presenting at our Senior Scholarship Donor Luncheon.
Dear Graham ISD Community,

What an exciting time to be a part of the Graham ISD family. At our most recent Board of Trustees meeting, we had the privilege of honoring many staff and students who are making their mark in the world. I will never grow tired of celebrating individual and team accomplishments. Thank you to everyone who supports GISD and helps make these personal and group achievements possible.

Even as our end-of-year activities pick up, we are making plans to welcome our newest little Steers and Lady Blues.

It's time for Pre-K Roundup!
If you have a child ages 3-5 who will be enrolling for the 2026-27 school year, plan to attend our Head Start, Pre-K and Kindergarten Roundup event on Wednesday, April 15 at Pioneer Elementary School. You can stop by the school anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Our staff will be on-site to assist you with the enrollment process.

Be sure to read our spring storm safety reminders in this month’s TeleGRAHAM. GISD will not have school on Friday, May 8 or Friday, May 15. These are unused bad weather make-up days that will remain student and staff holidays on this year's calendar. Also, our Board of Trustees recently approved a change to the last day of school for 2025-26. Trustees voted to update the current calendar to reflect an early release day on the last day of school, May 21, 2026. Graham ISD has additional minutes in the 2025-26 school calendar to allow for an early release day on the last day of instruction, which has been a customary practice in Graham ISD in prior school years.

It’s testing time in Texas and we want to be sure that we reduce stress and anxiety often associated with end of year exams and standardized tests. Be sure you check out our academic calendar and avoid visits to campus during testing days. Students of all ages are encouraged to get a good night’s rest and eat a healthy breakfast on test days (and every day!). Our children are more than one test, so encourage and remind them that these exams are just one way to showcase what they have learned this school year. They’ve got this! We look forward to celebrating our students for their academic progress.

It’s a VERY busy and exciting time of year with many end-of-year activities still ahead. Let’s finish strong, together!

Committed to Excellence,
Dr. Johnston

Board Approves Teacher Contracts, Library Books

On Wednesday evening, the Graham ISD Board of Trustees met for the regular monthly meeting. The Board approved 2026-27 contracts for teachers and other professional personnel. Trustees also approved $10,978.20 worth of library books for GISD campuses. The School Library Advisory Council (SLAC) met in advance of the Board’s vote to review the proposed library materials for the Pioneer, Crestview, Woodland, and Graham Junior High School Libraries. The SLAC did not find any objections with any of the library materials on the proposed procurement list. Funding for the books will come from the individual campus budgets.

During the April meeting Trustees received an update on the Graham ISD Community Resources Expo & Career Fair and on Special Olympics from Chief of Student Services, Joe Gordy and Dr. Kristina Martin. The district held the Graham ISD Community Resources Expo & Career Fair in the GHS Gym on March 25. The event was coordinated by Dr. Kristina Martin, Graham ISD Special Education Coordinator & Transition and Employment Coordinator. This year’s event saw impressive attendance, with 468 GHS students, 36 agencies, and one community visitor participating. Many students shared positive feedback, highlighting the valuable knowledge they gained. Additionally, several agencies praised the students from GHS for their involvement.

Special thanks to Dr. Martin for coordinating an awesome event. We appreciate our students who created the video of the event.

Special Olympics Basketball was held on March 7 and Trustees received a recap of
this well-attended event. Graham ISD students will take part in Special Olympics Track and Field in City View on April 18.

In other business, the Board of Trustees:

Facility Committee Tours School Construction Projects

Facility Committee Tours School Construction Projects
Several members of the GISD Facility Planning Committee recently joined representatives from Corgan on a tour of schools and at least one campus currently under construction in Denton ISD. Educators, parents, students and community leaders traveled by school bus to DISD on April 1 to tour Newton Rayzor Elementary School, Calhoun Middle School and Frank Borman Elementary School.

The FPC includes parents, students, employees, taxpayers and community leaders serving in an advisory capacity to the Board of Trustees. The group has been meeting since last fall to study facility needs across the district. Touring the DISD campuses gave committee members an opportunity to walk an active construction site and visit elementary and middle school classrooms, hallways and common areas. The group was able to see firsthand examples of ICC 500 storm shelters, tile/flooring examples, security vestibules, flexible furniture, storage, lighting and technology supports in place for teachers.

GISD had a Facility Assessment conducted of campuses and facilities throughout the district. Many of the identified concerns had to do with drainage, lighting, accessibility compliance and systems like HVAC or roofs that are at or beyond their life cycle and in need of replacement. It’s been nearly 20 years since Graham ISD voters approved a bond program for the construction and renovation of schools. The committee will continue its work through the end of the school year, making a recommendation to the Board of Trustees in early June.

The next FPC meeting is scheduled for April 15 at Graham Junior High School. The meeting will begin promptly at 6 p.m. and end at 8 p.m.

To see a list of members, upcoming meeting dates, agendas, slide presentations or just to follow the work of the FPC, visit the dedicated Facility Planning Committee webpage.

SAFETY CORNER- Spring Storm Procedures

Severe storms, flash flooding and gusty winds are common occurrences in Texas during the spring months. We’d like to take a few minutes to remind all of our families of our procedures regarding severe weather. The safety of students/staff are a top priority, and GISD will always respond first to the immediate emergency. After ensuring the safety of our students and staff, our next priority will be communicating with parents. Parents may not receive an immediate storm communication while the district manages the actual emergency. Once a response protocol is in place and announced for students and staff, parents will be notified through the ParentSquare communication system, and when possible, via the district’s social media accounts.

On school campuses, school officials regularly monitor The National Weather Service and weather apps and/or weather radios for any potential storm alerts or risks. When at all possible, communication with staff is done in advance of approaching storms and conditions are monitored regularly for potential threats to students on field trips and those out of the immediate area. School officials maintain open lines of communication with the local fire department and first responder recommendations for duck and cover (shelter-in-place) storm procedures, especially during arrival and dismissal times.

In the event severe weather is approaching, the district will account for students and staff in a secure location, ordering “Shelter” protocols in situations involving tornadic activity, flash floods or high winds. Keep in mind that a Tornado Watch means conditions are present for an emergency weather event including high winds or tornadic activity. A Tornado Warning means the doppler radar has picked up tornadic activity or a tornado has been spotted nearby or in the path of a school.

As an additional reminder to all school staff and bus drivers, do not attempt to drive through a high-water crossing. According to the National Weather Service’s “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” campaign, flash flooding is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in Texas.
Here are spring storm driving tips to remember:
  • Never walk, swim, or drive through still or moving flood waters. The water may be hiding dangers such as debris, tree branches, power lines, or damage to the road. As little as six inches of fast-moving water can cause motorists to lose control of their vehicle, even a pickup truck or SUV.T
  • Stay informed about weather conditions when you are driving.
  • Be especially careful driving at night when it can be harder to see flood dangers.
  • If your vehicle stalls in deep water, leave it and move to higher ground if you can do so safely.

Here's the law:
  • Never drive around barriers blocking low water crossings or flooded roadways. Penalties include a fine of up to $2,000 and/or up to 180 days in jail.
  • Tampering with roadway warning signs or barriers is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000, up to two years in jail, or both.

Finance Corner: Budgeting Wisely in GISD

Dollars and Sense

People First: Where Our Dollars Make the Most Sense

GISD’s $30.8 million general operating budget is built on one clear priority: people. With 336 educators and support personnel, the majority of our budget—approximately 72%—goes directly to student-focused instructional expenses, including salaries and benefits. The remaining dollars fund day-to-day operations (13%), debt service (12%) and district administrative functions (3%).

Every dollar in GISD’s operating budget starts with a source—and most of it comes from beyond our local community. For the 2025–26 school year, GISD anticipates receiving nearly $18 million in state funding, which accounts for 60% of its total revenue. An additional $10.6 million (36%) is expected from local tax collections and other local sources. The remaining 4%—about $1.2 million—comes from federal funds, primarily tied to indirect costs and specific student support services like special education.

Total revenue for the 2025-26 year is budgeted at $29.8 million, leaving an approximate deficit of $1 million. GISD recently shifted its fiscal year to help close the gap on the budget deficit and potentially support staff compensation. The shift of a fiscal year helps districts experience one-time savings. For Graham ISD, that savings is estimated at about $3 million.

The district is continuing the year-round budgeting process by reviewing the district’s comprehensive budget line by line to ensure all sources of funding are being maximized. These sources of funding include local property taxes, funding from the state and federal funding through Title grants. Each funding source has many different components, some with very specific purposes. For example, Federal Title I funds are intended to help close the achievement gap for disadvantaged students whereas Title III funds are intended for the benefit of English Learners. The goal of this review is to ensure all funds are used for their intended purpose and identify ways to help reduce the current budget shortfall.
